Summary

From the author of The Witch Boy trilogy comes a graphic novel about family, romance, and first love。
Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a secret: She can't wait to escape the perfect little island where she lives。 She's desperate to finish high school and escape her sad divorced mom, her volatile little brother, and worst of all, her great group of friends。。。who don't understand Morgan at all。 Because really, Morgan's biggest secret is that she has a lot of secrets, including the one about wanting to kiss another girl。

Then one night, Morgan is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl named Keltie。 The two become friends and suddenly life on the island doesn't seem so stifling anymore。

But Keltie has some secrets of her own。 And as the girls start to fall in love, everything they're each trying to hide will find its way to the surface。。。whether Morgan is ready or not。

Absolutely beautiful story! I bought this two days ago and finished it largely in two sittings。 I love how it contrasts the idea that you have to "learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else" and instead expresses to the reader that you can learn to love yourself and the life around you BY loving someone else。 Queer love is beautiful, transformative, and literally world-changing in this story (AND in real life), and I will sleep well tonight knowing that LGBTQ+ kids will get to read, Absolutely beautiful story! This was super cute! The Girl from the Sea is a young adult graphic novel about a human girl, Morgan, who falls in love with Keltie, who happens to be a selkie。 The artwork is so cute and colorful, I loved it! The romance between Morgan and Keltie is really adorable。 My only issue is that I did not really like the ending。

As an adult, this is a pretty solid 3。5-4。I got my copy today (yesterday by now) and left it for my gay/ pan 12 year old to open when she finished her homework。We ended up playing games until fairly late。Apparently, she started it and couldn’t put it down。A bit after 23, she came out of her bedroom and asked for a hug。 Then a couple more hugs。 She was so upset by the middle and the end of the book that she needed to talk about it。I hung out with her and helped her balance, then finished what I w As an adult, this is a pretty solid 3。5-4。I got my copy today (yesterday by now) and left it for my gay/ pan 12 year old to open when she finished her homework。We ended up playing games until fairly late。Apparently, she started it and couldn’t put it down。A bit after 23, she came out of her bedroom and asked for a hug。 Then a couple more hugs。 She was so upset by the middle and the end of the book that she needed to talk about it。I hung out with her and helped her balance, then finished what I was doing and went to bed。 I then read the book。It’s full of stupid teenager angst and annoying drama and people just failing to communicate。And that’s kind of the point。This is what romance and love is when you’re that age。 And that’s ok。She was really upset with the ending。 And I cried for quite a while。 But I think they were for different reasons。This book is beautiful and I love it。This is a Very good book to give to a MOGAI/ LGBTQIA+ youth。 。。。more

im not gonna say this book was perfect, but it was pretty damn closesapphic mermaids (or in this case, selkie) is one of my fav things ever and this was no exception。 the romance was super cute, the art was adorable and i love how many on-page kisses molly included in this!! esp bc the target audience is younger, and censorship seems to happen so much more frequently with childrens media, so the fact that morgan got to kiss her gf so many times was amazing and beautiful

I have no doubt you’re going to see a lot of “cute” adjacent adjectives when folks are describing this new graphic novel from Molly, and they’re not wrong。 Adorable, sweet, endearing, lovable, it is indeed all those things, but The Girl from the Sea does go a little deeper (sorry) than that。 But, if you’re in need of just “cute”, which can happen from time to time, then you certainly won’t be disappointed here。You’d think spending your carefree summers on a beautiful Canadian island surrounded b I have no doubt you’re going to see a lot of “cute” adjacent adjectives when folks are describing this new graphic novel from Molly, and they’re not wrong。 Adorable, sweet, endearing, lovable, it is indeed all those things, but The Girl from the Sea does go a little deeper (sorry) than that。 But, if you’re in need of just “cute”, which can happen from time to time, then you certainly won’t be disappointed here。You’d think spending your carefree summers on a beautiful Canadian island surrounded by friends, nature, and sunshine would be a teenage dream, but Morgan Kwon is struggling these days。 Between her parent’s divorce, annoying brother, and carrying around a huge secret (she’s pretty sure she’s gay), Morgan isn’t as stoked as society tells her she should be。Keeping a secret that big from your family and closest friends must be impossibly hard, and I have a great empathy for those that have to keep their sexual orientation from their loved ones out of fear。 Unsurprisingly then, it takes its toll on Morgan who is choosing flight as a response mechanism, with designs on running away to college as soon as she can where she can start a whole new life for herself, where she can finally breath。 She just has to survive one…last…summer。This is a coming-of-age story first and foremost and Morgan’s struggle to be open about her burgeoning sexual orientation。 What’s the best way to complicate that and run rickshaw over her plans of escape? A very cute graphic novel about a closeted lesbian teenager who falls in love with a selkie, has family problems, friend problems, some adventures, and a hopeful ending。 Slightly too juvenile for me, but a teen me would probably have loved this to bits。 Was also not a fan of (view spoiler)[the sibling-outs-their-sibling-to-the-family trope (hide spoiler)]。 Still cute, though! great way to start pride month for me!! this book was adorable and i love it a lot!! i only wish we'd got to see a little more of her bonding with her friends at the beginning so that it was clearer that they're actually good friends。 but wow a great book! great way to start pride month for me!! this book was adorable and i love it a lot!! i only wish we'd got to see a little more of her bonding with her friends at the beginning so that it was clearer that they're actually good friends。 but wow a great book! 。。。more

2 StarsGreat art, realistic text exchanges between teens (!), awesome fashion, real issues (except the selkie girlfriend)。 I understand that the plot is juggling with a lot of subplots, and the main character with a lot of different issues—but there’s not really any redeemable qualities to Morgan。 She’s not a good friend, sister, or girlfriend, and there are no consequences to this。 Her girlfriend also nearly murders an entire boat of people, with no consequences。

What a sweet wonderful book。Morgan considers herself an average girl, in an in-crowd at high school, dealing with her parent's divorce and little brother's onset dickery, when she's saved from drowning by a mysterious girl, or a REALLY cute near-death hallucination。Keltie turns out to be a selkie, however, bonded to Morgan by true love's kiss。 This gets in the way of Morgan hiding being gay until she's moved out of their small town to a city college。 The summer becomes a balancing act of her rel What a sweet wonderful book。Morgan considers herself an average girl, in an in-crowd at high school, dealing with her parent's divorce and little brother's onset dickery, when she's saved from drowning by a mysterious girl, or a REALLY cute near-death hallucination。Keltie turns out to be a selkie, however, bonded to Morgan by true love's kiss。 This gets in the way of Morgan hiding being gay until she's moved out of their small town to a city college。 The summer becomes a balancing act of her relationship with Keltie, being both gay and unintentionally eternally wedded to a mythical creature, and hiding both of these facts from her friends and family。 But Keltie may be hiding things of her own。I really enjoyed how there was just like no homophobia in this。 Please more of that。 。。。more

Molly Ostertag’s THE GIRL FROM THE SEA brings together both fantastical and very real emotions and events in a graphic novel that addresses first love, hiding one’s true self from friends and family, and coming-of-age。 The fantastical arrives in the form of Keltie, a selkie without inhibitions — but with a secret。 The very real involves Morgan Kwon’s parents who are recently divorced, her friends who don’t “get” her, and her abrasive little brother。 Morgan’s life brings this all together as she Molly Ostertag’s THE GIRL FROM THE SEA brings together both fantastical and very real emotions and events in a graphic novel that addresses first love, hiding one’s true self from friends and family, and coming-of-age。 The fantastical arrives in the form of Keltie, a selkie without inhibitions — but with a secret。 The very real involves Morgan Kwon’s parents who are recently divorced, her friends who don’t “get” her, and her abrasive little brother。 Morgan’s life brings this all together as she falls in love with Keltie, but refuses to share her new relationship with anyone around her。 Heartstrings are pulled, and readers will root for the girls as their relationship develops and grows。Full review: https://mutterschwester。wordpress。com。。。 。。。more

cw: on page outingI expected nothing less from the person who gave the world The Witch Boy。 The art is stunning, the colors are vibrant, and the story is wholesome and sweet and yet still deals with hard topics like dealing with the aftermath of divorce, coming out, first love, and balancing personal life with close friends。 And honestly, I didn't know I needed sapphic selkie stories until I read this。 cw: on page outingI expected nothing less from the person who gave the world The Witch Boy。 The art is stunning, the colors are vibrant, and the story is wholesome and sweet and yet still deals with hard topics like dealing with the aftermath of divorce, coming out, first love, and balancing personal life with close friends。 And honestly, I didn't know I needed sapphic selkie stories until I read this。 。。。more
